Best High School Sports Programs in the East Valley for Student Athletes in 2026

One of the questions I get most often from relocating families with high school athletes is simple: where should we live?

Not which city has the best restaurants or the shortest commute — though those matter too. Which city gives my kid the best shot?

It is a completely legitimate question. And in the East Valley the answer depends on the sport. Because different schools have built different legacies, different coaching staffs, and different pipelines to college programs.

Here is the honest breakdown by sport and by school for families with serious student athletes in 2026.

Football — Where the East Valley Reigns Nationally

The East Valley’s football reputation is not local — it is national. The Premier Region of the AIA 6A Conference, which includes Hamilton, Chandler, Perry, and Basha, is considered one of the most competitive high school football regions in the United States. National scouts know it. College coaches know it. ESPN and ESPNU broadcast games from this region.

Chandler High School — The NFL Factory

No Arizona high school has produced more NFL players than Chandler High School. Fourteen NFL alumni. Active NFL players on current rosters. A pipeline that flows directly from the East Valley to professional stadiums across the country.

The Wolves compete at the highest level in Arizona’s 6A Conference. Their annual “Battle of Arizona Avenue” showdown against Hamilton draws 10,000+ fans and national media attention. If your son plays football and wants to compete against future college and pro players every single week of his high school career — Chandler’s football environment is as good as it gets in Arizona.

Notable NFL alumni: Terrell Suggs (Ravens, 2 Super Bowls), Brett Hundley, Chase Lucas (49ers). Fourteen total NFL players. Arizona’s all-time leader in NFL production.

Hamilton High School — Seven State Championships

Hamilton Huskies football has won seven Arizona state championships — placing them third all-time in the state behind only St. David and Chaparral. In 2020, Hamilton was ranked #1 in the nation by MaxPreps. That is not a regional ranking. That is national.

The program operates with professional-level structure — 35+ paid coaches, a self-sustaining booster program, two field houses, and a newly converted artificial turf stadium. Multiple NFL and CFL alumni coach within the program, meaning the kids are being developed by people who have lived at the next level.

The Hamilton vs Chandler rivalry game has been broadcast on ESPN, ESPNU, and the NFHS Network. It is appointment viewing for college recruiters across the country.

Perry High School — The Rising Program

Perry’s football program produced Brock Purdy — the 49ers starting quarterback who set the AIA 6A record with 57 touchdown passes and led Perry to back-to-back state championship games. The Pumas compete in the same Premier Region against Hamilton and Chandler every season, meaning Perry’s players face elite competition week in and week out as a baseline for their development.

The Bottom Line for Football Families

If football is the priority — this three-school corridor along Arizona Avenue in Chandler and Gilbert is one of the most elite competitive environments for high school football in the American Southwest. Your son will practice against and compete against future college scholarship players and NFL prospects as a regular part of his development.

Basketball — Perry’s Four-Peat Dynasty

Perry High School — National Powerhouse

The Perry Pumas basketball program under head coach Sam Duane Jr. is simply in a class of its own in Arizona right now. From 2022 through 2025, Perry won four consecutive Open Division state championships — going 107-14 over Koa Peat’s four-year run in the program.

During that dynasty, Perry competed nationally. They defeated the #6 nationally ranked Grayson, Georgia team at the HoopHall Classic at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. They competed in the prestigious Les Schwab Invitational in Portland. They were ranked as high as #7 nationally by MaxPreps.

Coach Sam Duane Jr. has compiled over 490 wins and eight state championship game appearances. He has been named Arizona Coach of the Year five times, the MaxPreps National Coach of the Year, and the NABC National Coach of the Year. He was previously the head coach at Corona del Sol where he led four consecutive Division 1 state championships from 2012 to 2015.

This is not a program that had one good year. This is a program with a multi-decade track record of developing elite basketball players.

Alumni who have gone on from this program include Jalen Williams — 2025 NBA Champion, All-Star, OKC Thunder — and Cody Williams, 10th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and Utah Jazz forward.

The message to basketball families is clear: if your child is serious about the game and wants to compete in an environment that sees national competition regularly, Perry’s basketball program is the standard in Arizona right now.

Hamilton High School — Multiple Sports Excellence

While Perry has dominated basketball’s top classification recently, Hamilton’s boys basketball program has its own strong tradition. And Hamilton’s Girls Flag Football team made history winning the 6A State Championship in 2023 in the AIA’s newly introduced sport — with senior Samaya Taylor-Jenkins earning a spot on the US Olympic team as a result.

Baseball — The Chandler Corridor

Hamilton High School — Cody Bellinger’s Home

Hamilton High School’s baseball program produced Cody Bellinger — NL MVP, World Series champion, and New York Yankee. And his brother Cole, also a Hamilton alum, was drafted by the San Diego Padres. That is two professional players from the same family from the same program.

Hamilton competes in the 6A Conference and has produced multiple MLB Draft selections over the years. The warm Arizona climate means 12 months of baseball development — a genuine competitive advantage for players who want to get year-round work in before their high school career begins.

Mesquite High School — Gilbert

Mesquite High School in Gilbert produced MLB pitcher Zach Davies — drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2011 and a MLB-level pitcher for multiple years across several organizations. Gilbert’s baseball culture runs deep.

Arizona’s Unique Baseball Advantage

There is something that no other state in the continental United States can offer baseball players quite like Arizona — the Cactus League. Every spring, 15 Major League Baseball teams hold spring training within driving distance of the East Valley. The Diamondbacks, Rockies, Cubs, Brewers, Padres, Giants, Mariners, Angels, and more all train here.

For serious baseball families, access to professional training facilities, professional-level coaching, and the ability to watch MLB players up close during development is not theoretical. It is available within 30-45 minutes of most East Valley neighborhoods every spring.

Cross-Sport Athletic Culture — Why the East Valley Produces Elite Athletes

The question I sometimes hear is why — why does this particular corridor of Arizona produce so many elite athletes across so many sports?

The answer is multi-layered.

Year-round training: The East Valley climate allows outdoor training 12 months a year. There is no off-season forced by weather. Baseball, football, basketball, track and field, soccer — all can be practiced and developed year-round. That adds up over a high school career.

Elite competition within the region: The Premier Region of the AIA 6A Conference means Hamilton, Chandler, Perry, and Basha compete against each other regularly. When your weekly practice opponent is a future NFL player, your development accelerates. The competition level creates players who are already battle-tested before college coaches ever see them.

Exceptional coaching: The coaching staffs at these schools include former professional players and coaches who have competed at the highest levels. Hamilton’s football program employs NFL and CFL alumni as coaches. Perry’s Sam Duane Jr. is one of the most accomplished basketball coaches in Arizona history with a multi-decade track record. This is not accidental — these programs actively recruit coaching talent.

Community investment: East Valley communities invest in athletic facilities at a level that reflects how seriously they take youth sports. Hamilton’s $2.9 million artificial turf conversion. Perry’s full athletic complex. State-of-the-art weight rooms and training facilities across the district.

Chandler Unified’s infrastructure: All of these powerhouse programs — Hamilton, Chandler, Perry, and Basha — are within the Chandler Unified School District. CUSD has built an infrastructure around athletics that serves as a talent pipeline and development system from youth through high school.

For Families Considering the East Valley

If athletics are part of why you are choosing where to put down roots — the East Valley is not just competitive. It is nationally recognized.

Your child will compete against the best players in Arizona every season. They will be coached by people who have competed at the highest levels. They will train year-round in one of the best climates in the country. And they will do all of this in communities with outstanding schools, safe neighborhoods, and an infrastructure built around family success.

I am happy to talk through which community and which school would be the best fit for your student athlete’s sport, goals, and personality.
