One of the first questions I get from buyers relocating to Arizona is some version of this — “I love Queen Creek but how bad is the commute to Phoenix?” Or “Is Gilbert really that close to everything?”
I get it. Commute time is a dealbreaker for a lot of people. So I did the research — pulling real Google Maps commute estimates during morning rush hour so you have honest numbers before you start falling in love with a neighborhood that may not work for your lifestyle.
Here is the honest guide to commuting in the East Valley in 2026.
Gilbert to Chandler
Estimated commute: 15-20 minutes
Route: Loop 202 SanTan Freeway west
The honest take: This is one of the easiest commutes in the East Valley. Gilbert and Chandler are essentially neighbors and the Loop 202 keeps traffic moving well even during rush hour. If you work in Chandler and want to live in Gilbert — this commute should never be a reason to say no.
Practical tip: Take the Loop 202 west rather than surface streets. It shaves 5-10 minutes off the drive every time.
Gilbert to Phoenix
Estimated commute: 30-40 minutes
Route: Loop 202 west to I-10 north or Loop 202 to US-60 west
The honest take: Totally manageable. Gilbert to downtown Phoenix during morning rush is a straight shot on the freeway with predictable traffic. This is not a commute that will wear you down.
Practical tip: Leave by 7am. After 7:30am the I-10 north through downtown gets congested and your 35-minute drive becomes 50 minutes fast.
Queen Creek to Chandler
Estimated commute: 25-35 minutes
Route: Ellsworth Road or Rittenhouse Road north to Loop 202
The honest take: A reasonable commute for the lifestyle Queen Creek offers. You are trading a few extra minutes of drive time for significantly more space, larger lots, and better school ratings. Most Queen Creek buyers tell me it is worth every minute.
Practical tip: Avoid surface streets during rush hour. Get to the Loop 202 as quickly as possible and the rest of the drive is smooth.
Queen Creek to Phoenix
Estimated commute: 45-55 minutes
Route: Loop 202 west to I-10 north
The honest take: This is the commute you need to be honest with yourself about. 45-55 minutes each way is nearly 2 hours of driving daily. If you are heading into Phoenix 5 days a week this adds up. If you are hybrid or remote and only going in 2-3 days a week — Queen Creek is still very much worth considering.
Practical tip: Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is just 15 minutes from Queen Creek. If your job involves frequent travel this is a significant advantage that offsets the longer Phoenix commute.
San Tan Valley to Phoenix
Estimated commute: 50-65 minutes
Route: Hunt Highway north to Loop 202 west to I-10 north
The honest take: This is the longest commute on this list and I want to be straight with you about it. San Tan Valley to Phoenix during morning rush hour can hit 60-65 minutes on a bad day. The tradeoff is that San Tan Valley offers the most affordable new construction in the East Valley by a significant margin. For remote workers or buyers who commute occasionally — the value is exceptional. For daily Phoenix commuters — weigh this carefully.
Practical tip: The Hunt Highway to Loop 202 connection is your best friend. Avoid US-60 through Mesa during rush hour — it adds significant time.
Mesa to Tempe
Estimated commute: 20-30 minutes
Route: US-60 west or Loop 202 west to Loop 101
The honest take: Mesa to Tempe is an easy commute that often surprises people. Mesa’s western areas especially are extremely well connected to Tempe. If you work at Arizona State University or anywhere in the Tempe corridor — Mesa is an excellent and underrated option.
Practical tip: The light rail connects several Mesa stations directly into Tempe and downtown Phoenix. If your workplace is near a light rail stop this is worth considering — park and ride and skip the traffic entirely.
Mesa to Scottsdale
Estimated commute: 25-35 minutes
Route: US-60 west to Loop 101 north or Superstition Freeway to Loop 101
The honest take: A smooth commute that most Mesa residents do not find stressful. Loop 101 north into Scottsdale moves well outside of peak rush hours. During peak morning traffic plan for 35 minutes.
Practical tip: Leave by 6:45am if you want the 25-minute version. After 7:30am Scottsdale Road and Loop 101 both back up heading north.
Gold Canyon to Mesa
Estimated commute: 30-40 minutes
Route: US-60 west
The honest take: Gold Canyon is the most scenic commute on this list — the Superstition Mountains are your view for the first 15 minutes heading west. The US-60 into Mesa is mostly freeway and moves reasonably well. If you work in east Mesa or near the Gateway Airport corridor this commute is very manageable.
Practical tip: East Mesa is only 20-25 minutes from Gold Canyon. If your job is in central or west Mesa plan for 35-40 minutes during rush hour.
Sun Lakes to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport
Estimated commute: 20-25 minutes
Route: I-10 west to Loop 202 or direct via I-10
The honest take: Sun Lakes has one of the best airport access situations of any community in the East Valley. 20-25 minutes to Sky Harbor is a major lifestyle advantage for frequent travelers and it is one of the reasons Sun Lakes has been popular with snowbirds and professionals for decades.
Practical tip: Take I-10 west — it is the most direct route and avoids most surface street congestion.
Which East Valley City Has the Best Commute for You
Remote Workers
If you work from home and only commute occasionally — San Tan Valley and Queen Creek offer the best value for your dollar. You get the most space, best lots, and most scenic setting without paying the daily commute price. Apache Junction is also worth a look for the same reason.
Healthcare Workers
Gilbert and Chandler are your best options. Both cities are within 15-25 minutes of Banner Gilbert Medical Center, Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Chandler Regional Medical Center, and Banner Heart Hospital. Mesa is also well positioned near Banner Baywood.
Tech Professionals
Gilbert and Chandler are the clear winners. The Chandler tech corridor — home to Intel, PayPal, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America — is easily accessible from both cities in 15-25 minutes. Gilbert to Chandler is practically a neighborhood drive.
Phoenix Commuters
Gilbert and Mesa are your best bets for a manageable daily Phoenix commute at 30-40 minutes. Queen Creek and San Tan Valley work well for hybrid schedules. If you are commuting to downtown Phoenix 5 days a week — I would not recommend anything further east than Gilbert or Mesa unless you genuinely love the drive.
The Bottom Line
The East Valley is big. Where you live relative to where you work genuinely matters — both for your daily quality of life and for your sanity.
My advice to every buyer I work with is this: before you fall in love with a neighborhood, drive the commute. Do it on a Tuesday morning at 7:30am. Do it on a Thursday evening at 5:30pm. The commute you will actually be driving should be part of your decision — not an afterthought.
I am happy to help you think through which East Valley city makes the most sense for your specific work situation. It is one of the conversations I have most often with relocating buyers and it can save you from making a decision you regret six months later.
